The creation of a park or area of open ground for recreation and green space edged by Montgomery Street and South Elgin Street dates to the development of housing, particularly tenement building, in the latter part of the nineteenth century. In the mid nineteenth century the area had been nursery or market garden, one of a number of nurseries along the road to Leith (Leith Walk) from the city centre. By the late nineteenth century the eastern end was a bowling green. The park now consists of open grass and a child play area to the west end, including a locally loved steel tube helter-skelter.
