Archaeology Notes

NO88NE 19 8818 8528

(Area: NO 8718 8528) A small dun is said to have stood on Downie Point, thought to be a corruption of 'Dunie', ie. 'Little Fort'. There are now no remains of fortifications on the point.

Scots Magazine 1807; Name Book 1865.

The most probable site for the reputed dun on Downie Point is the flat, grass-covered summit of the peninsula centred at NO 8818 8528, measuring about 43.0m NW to SE by 20.0m transversely. The peninsula is approached from the sea by steep slopes and rock faces, and from the landward side by a narrow path over a deep chasm. No trace of walling or fortifications could be found on the summit, and there is no local information concerning this site.

Visited by OS (RD), 23 July 1965.

There is nothing to suggest that Downie Point has been the site of fortification.

Visited by RCAHMS, March 1983.
