Note (2 October 2019)

Date Fieldwork Started: 02/10/2019

Compiled by: ScRAP Team

Location Notes: The panel is on the flat upper surface of a large schist outcrop, measuring roughly 80m N-S, situated within a young plantation of mixed deciduous and pine about 100m N of the small settlement of Lurgan on a S facing hillside above upper Strath Tay. There are views through the trees to the hills on the S side of Strath Tay. The panel near to the E edge of the outcrop, which lies about 25m W of a wooden fence to a one-hole golf course and the houses of Lurgan beyond. There is some evidence of quarrying along the S and E edges of the outcrop, and it is likely that some of this stone has been used in the construction of a lime kiln, situated on the edge of the outcrop about 40m SSW of the main concentration of panels (and around 50m SW of Lurgan Farm 13). The outcrop is mainly covered in young trees, turf and vegetation, but has several exposed areas with carvings and it is likely that there are further carved surfaces beneath the vegetation. There are at least 14 other panels on this outcrop, alongside Lurgan Farm 15, which are all grouped under the same Canmore ID (Canmore 30455, ScRAP 2477): Lurgan Farm 1 is the closest, approximately 20m to the SW, and the main concentration of panels (Lurgan Farm 1-10) are approximately 30m to the SW. Lurgan Farm 11-12 and 13-14 are also on the outcrop, further to the SW.

Panel Notes: A small, rectangular panel measuring 1.1 x 0.9m, rising to 0.2m at its maximum height. The rock surface is smooth and flat, with some natural pitting and cracks, and is level with the surrounding turf at its S and W edges. When recorded in October 2019, the panel was covered lightly with moss. It is carved with 1 large cup, and 1 possible smaller cup.
