Drumtroddan 6

Location Notes: Drumtroddan 6 is part of a group of cup-and-ring marked rocks (Drumtroddan 5 - 7) located within an enclosure within a wooded area approximately 250m S of Drumtroddan Farm. Further rock art panels are located within two fenced-off enclosures approximately 70m to the E (Drumtroddan 1-4 and Drumtroddan 8-13). Drumtroddan 5 - 7 are part of the same Canmore ID (62767) and HER record (MDG2439). Together with the panels within the fenced-off enclosures they are part of the same scheduled monument designation (SM90101), and are properties in care. Drumtroddan 6 is located about 1m to the S of Drumtroddan 5, which is the largest panel in the enclosure. Drumtroddan 7 is located about 5m to the W of Drumtroddan 5. The enclosure within the wooded area is separated from the field by a drystone field dyke with a stone stile set into it. The enclosure measures approximately 10x12m.

The panels all lie at the highest point of the field, and there are views in particular to the N towards Drumtroddan farm, and beyond to the N and NE towards the Galloway hills. Views in other directions are partially obscured by trees.

Panel Notes: Drumtroddan 6 is long, flattish panel separated into two parts by a section of turf. It measures 1.8 x 0.5 m across its whole surface with the section to the SE being about 1 m in length, and the turf area about 45cm in length. The panel is largely flush with the turf, rising only to 0.1m at its highest. The carved surface slopes broadly to the NE: in the SE section the panel slopes at about 5° and the NW section at about 10°.

The panel surface is heavily weathered and the stone is fairly course. It contains the following motifs:

In the SE section there is a large cup with four partial rings, all truncated on the S side where the rock is eroded. On the S side of the motif, the two outermost rings are also partially truncated, possibly due to erosion. There are two further motifs to the NW on this section of the panel, both being cups with one partial ring, and they lie in a line from the large motif.

In the NW section, there is a large cup (approximately 7cm in diameter) with three partial rings. All are truncated on the S side by the edge of the rock, but none complete a circle of the cup on the N side. The motif is cut across by two natural fissures, one of which expands to a large natural hollow at the W side of the cup.
