Activities

Note (13 April 2019)

Date Fieldwork Started: 13/04/2019

Compiled by: Whithorn

Location Notes: This is one of a group of carvings recorded at this location (see also Cairnholy 4, 11, 12 and 14) which were originally recorded under Canmore 63726 and in the HER under MDG3326, but have here been allocated their own unique record. These carvings are located across the surface of an exposed outcrop which lies adjacent to the field wall at the lower, W edge of a field of improved pasture. The carving are positioned primarily towards the eastern most edge of the outcrop, which has a steep drop off to the north, west and south. The other rock art panels in the group lie nearby, including: Cairnholy 4 2m to the N and Cairnholy 12 2m to the NE. In the wider landscape, Cairnholy 8 (ScRAP ID: 1090; Canmore ID: 77510) is located c. 100m to the NE, and Cairnholy 5 (ScRAP ID: 2159; Canmore ID: 63728) is located c. 180m to the NNE.

Panel Notes: A large, roughly rectangular section of the outcrop measuring 3.6m by 2.3m and up to 1.8m in height. The panel has a relatively flat upper surface where the majority of the motifs are carved, but slopes on most sides in various directions. The main group, in the NW, consists of 7 cups and two cups with double, partial rings. There are also four other cups to the north and one cup with partial double rings. There is one more cup on its own to the south.
