Activities

Note (13 April 2019)

Date Fieldwork Started: 13/04/2019

Compiled by: Whithorn

Location Notes: This is one of a group of carvings recorded at this location (see also Cairnholy 4, 11, 13 and 14) which were originally recorded under Canmore 63726 and in the HER under MDG3326, but have here been allocated their own unique record. These carvings are located across the surface of an exposed outcrop which lies adjacent to the field wall at the lower, W edge of a field of improved pasture. The carving are positioned primarily towards the eastern most edge of the outcrop, which has a steep drop off to the north, west and south. The other rock art panels in the group lie nearby, the closest are: Cairnholy 13, which is 1.7m to the S; Cairnholy 4 which is 0.5m to the NW and Cairnholy 14 which is up to 1.8m to the NE. In the wider landscape, Cairnholy 8 (ScRAP ID: 1090; Canmore ID: 77510) is located c. 100m to the NE, and Cairnholy 5 (ScRAP ID: 2159; Canmore ID: 63728) is located c. 180m to the NNE.

Panel Notes: A roughly egg shaped, exposed area of the outcrop measuring 1.0 by 3.5m in size. The panel is mostly flat and lies flush with the ground. The panel is divided in two by a central fissure. The western most part starting from the western end includes: a large cup with two or three partial rings joined to a smaller cup by a tail; an elongated lozenge that might be natural; a cup with one ring that has a partial tail; and three cups close together at the E end. The northern most part includes: 4 cups close to each other, and one large cup to the E of them.

Note: In his 1995 book entitled 'Morris' Prehistoric Rock Art of Galloway' Van Hoek has mis-labelled the association between a motif and it's numbering. On p96 fig39 a motif which is connected to his 4c (ScRAP panel Cairnholy 12 - this panel) has been labelled as 8, but is clearly a motif on this panel. Cairnholy 8, in reality, only depicts 2 cup marks.
