Watching Brief (7 November 2019 - 10 December 2019)
NH 49677 42071 An evaluation was carried out, 7 November – 10 December 2019, prior to proposed development of a new holiday cottage. The site forms part of the Beaufort Estate holdings and lies to the immediate south of and just outside the designated area of the Beaufort Castle garden and designed landscape, and because several prehistoric monuments have been identified nearby.
A trench was opened in order to target the footprint of the new house and associated septic tank and soakaway. A small number of dispersed archaeological features and deposits were preserved within the trench, including the remains of a possible kiln or corn dryer, suggesting low intensity archaeological activity of probable post-medieval date within the site and its environs. Due to the likely possibility of further archaeological features and deposits surviving within the development area it was recommended that a programme of archaeological recording and a watching brief was undertaken. No archaeologically significant features, structures or artefacts were identified within the footprint of the holiday cottage. The previously recorded kiln/corn dryer was again located and subsequently removed during the excavation of the septic tank installation pit. No further features were identified either within the installation pit or during the excavation of the associated service trenches.
