Field Visit (September 2019 - October 2019)
NG 87491 16530 A walkover survey was undertaken in advance of a woodland planting scheme. The survey was required in order to assess and record the nature and extent of any upstanding archaeology affected by the proposed development and took place in September and October 2019.
The walkover survey identified 29 sites, comprising mainly post-medieval shielings and dykes. While a small number of sites had been identified on historic mapping, most of the structures were newly recorded. Most of the sites consisted of stone-built shielings located on the slopes of Ruighe na Corpaich. Several of the structures had evidence of later re-use as twinning pens. Interestingly, a flat terrace on Tor Beag contained the remains of small stone settings and a stone/turf bank enclosing the terrace, potentially representing the remains of an Iron Age dun.
