Metal Detector Find (2018)
NT 77 37 A small, incomplete Anglo-Saxon silver-gilt pyramidal mount with an integral bar across the base to attach it to the strap on a sword harness. Each of the mount’s four faces is decorated with three small triangular-shaped facetted depressions, in which traces of gilding survive. The squared-off apex of the pyramid contains a square cloisonné inset in a translucent red material; the lack of visible bubbles and the presence of a waffle-textured gold foil behind the setting suggest it is more likely to be garnet than glass. Dimensions: base 14mm x 13.7mm; height 8.5mm.
Claimed as Treasure Trove (TT 151/18) and allocated to National Museums Scotland
