Activities

Metal Detector Find (2018)

NT 58 37 An unusual enamelled Iron Age copper-alloy tankard handle was recovered by metal-detecting. The elongated oval form is typical of north British tankards, but the decoration is an exceptional complex reserved pattern based on a central four-legged spiral, and evoking a pair of flowering plants (L 81mm, W 25mm). No sites are known in the vicinity, but a Roman brooch found nearby (DES 2016, 150) suggests a locus of activity.

Claimed as Treasure Trove (TT 58/18) and allocated to NMS (X.FA 150)
