Archaeology Notes

NO79SW 6 7404 9373.

'A large mound of stones about 70 feet in diameter by 12 feet high on the summit of a hill called Cairnshee. It has the appearance of being very ancient but does not appear to have ever been opened.

Name Book 1864.

This cairn in a forestry plantation measures about 19.0 metres in dia meter and 3.0 metres in height. There is no trace of any kerb, entrance or chamber but there are a number of depressions all over the cairn which appear modern. The stones of the cairn are not overgrown with moss or grass, suggesting that this cairn could be modern. However the size and shape of the cairn and the fact that the stones are all 0.3 metres in diameter appears to refute this.

Visited by OS, January 1965.

In a clearing on the summit of Cairnshee there is a cairn which measures 23m in diameter by 3.6m in height. A small enclosure, measuring 3.5m from WNW to ESE by 2.6m transversely within a bank of stones 2m thick and 0.5m high, is situated at the foot of the cairn on the SSW.

J C Watt 1914; RCAHMS 1984, visited March 1984.
