Standing Building Recording (18 October 2019)
NT 25206 74122 A historic building survey was carried out of the former mews building and bookbinders at 20-22 North West Thistle Street Lane. The works were undertaken, on 18 October 2019, prior to the renovation.
The buildings at 20–22 North West Thistle Street Lane were originally constructed as mews buildings to the rear of four 18th-century tenements fronting Queen Street. By the late 19th century, however, the block to the west was rebuilt, extending to almost reach the rear of the tenements at 28 and 29 Queen Street. This was the bindery, constructed for William Hunter at No 22, who also owned the properties at Queen Street. The site remained relatively unchanged until the 1970s when – after it no longer functioned as a bookbinders - the site was used as training facilities for the Society of Accountants. Parts of the former bindery were taken down and rebuilt in the 1980s, with an additional extension added to the rear. The superstructure was replaced with concrete floors and steel beams, and now little, if anything, of the internal layout and partitions survive within the building.
