(NO 7678 8038) Glenbervie House (NR)

OS 6" map, Kincardineshire, 2nd ed., (1904)

The oldest part of the present Glenbervie House is an oblong block with two round towers projecting to the E, of 15th or 16th century date, whose original fabric remains to a height of eight feet above ground level. According to Tranter the towers are of a courtyard-type castle of early date with some of the curtain walling still traceable (Tranter 1962-70). It was altered and enlarged in 1700, and in 1854 when the entire roof-line and northern (sic) frontage was altered in pseudo-baronial style (Simpson 1962).

Edward 1 spent a night in Glenbervie Castle in 1296, when it was held by the Melville family. It passed to Sir Alexander Auchinleck in 1468 (Simpson 1962).

W D Simpson 1962; N Tranter 1962-70.

Glenbervie House, occupied and in good condition, is as described by Simpson. The curtain walling mentioned by Tranter could not be located. The roof of the S tower was altered in 1964 to make it the same as the N tower.

Visited by OS (RL) 11 December 1969.

Listed.
