Field Visit
This report includes details of around 270 sites surveyed over a four year period across the remote Lees peninsula on the east coast of North Uist in the southern Outer Hebrides. Now uninhabited, the area contained up to 10 townships in the 18th century whose inhabitants were involved in subsistence farming and kelping. Whilst the majority of sites date to the early modern period, a number of late medieval shieling sites have been recorded along with two possible pre-historic roundhouses, a cup marked stone and several rock shelters. In addition, two ‘lost’ Canmore listed sites were re-located and first time survey drawings of two duns and a broch prepared.
