Activities

Excavation (12 May 2018 - 13 May 2018)

NS 9163 7942 An area to the E and S of Birchwood House was excavated, 12 – 13 May 2018, to assess the degree of disturbance that had been caused by the construction of a house in 1980. It was found that all the Roman levels in the immediate area had been removed by the excavation of a large basement, and beyond that Roman levels only survived below 0.8m from the present surface, except at the very easternmost limit of the property where the boulder platform of a building lay only 0.4m down. Roman pottery was recovered from the disturbed levels, including a samian base with a graffito.
