Activities

Field Visit (26 March 2019)

Nothing can now be seen of this guardhouse which was introduced as part of the infrastructure of the battery by the Admiralty in World War I. It stood 11.5m SW of the Engine House (NH86NW 9.13) and inside the security fence (NH86NW 9.51) surrounding Site No.1. It was rectangular on plan and measured about 5m from NNW to SSE by 3m transversely, with a porch on the ENE. A plan in the Fort Record Book held by the National Archives at Kew (WO78/5192-16/19) identifies it as a ‘Guard Room’, while a sketch map of the battery entitled ‘Telephone Circuits’ in the same source (ADM 7/942), dated 7 May 1919, labels it as ‘Cells’.

Visited by HES Survey and Recording (ATW, AKK) 26 March 2019.
