Archaeology Notes

NO77NW 40 72666 78521

Rebuilt in the 19th century, Denmill is a 2-storey and rubble built rectangle at right angles to road. The kiln with it's tall square distillery type vent is at the east roadside end. It has piended roofs with straight skew at kiln. The mill is partly gutted with a garage having been inserted into lower part of the kiln. A 8-spoke wood and iron overshot wheel survives at the West end. The wheel dimensions are 11ft diameter 4'4 wide. Generally the roofs are in poor condition. There is a corrugated iron lean-to along the north flank.

(Location cited as NO 727 785). Den Mill, Auchenblae, mid 19th century. A two-storey and attic, five-bay rubble building, on a rectangular plan with a kiln at one end. The kiln vent is of the distillery type, unusually large and fine. At the opposite end is an 8-spoke wood and iron overshot wheel, 4ft 4ins (1.32m) wide by 11ft (3.35m) diameter.

Activities

Publication Account (2013)

Founded as a flax spinning mill in 1801 (but often stated to be 1795). Gas light and steam power were added after 1830. Machinery was sold off in 1856 but spinning resumed in 1859 until the late 19th Century. It operated as a distillery from 1896 to 1926, and owes its large pagoda kiln to the work of Charles Doig in fitting this to the relatively small grist mill. Overshot wheel 11ft (3.35m) diameter, 4ft 4” (1.32m) wide, timber buckets and spokes, the rest is of iron. The distillery had operated a turbine and generator. Well converted from a garage to a house c2004, with upgraded corrugated iron lean-to.
