Activities

Field Visit (27 May 2019)

What remains of this gateway in the security fence (NH86NW 9.51), which was built by the Army during the Second World War, is situated between a modern fence-line enclosing a field of improved pasture to the NW and the track leading SW to the North Sutor Land Service Battery Site No.2 (NH86NW 9.48). Although no trace of the main gate spanning the track can be observed, what may be the twisted remnants of a pedestrian side gate hang by a hinge from a stout iron post at a point where the fence makes a sharp turn to the NW.

The gateway is depicted on two RAF aerial photographs (106G/RAF/0751/6039-40) flown on 31 August 1945.

Visited by HES, Survey and Recording (ATW, AKK), 27 May 2019.
