Archaeology Notes

NO67SW 5 c. 62 70.

A Middle Bronze Age flanged axe (Class II), 5 3/8" by 2 5/8", found in the Bogs of Arnhall at a depth of ten feet, has been in Montrose Museum since at least 1859 (Accession no: 67). Arnhall Moss, which was drained in 1818, lay at about NO 6270.

J M Coles 1966; Archaeol Inst Great Britain Ireland 1859; New Statistical Account (NSA) 1845.

The axe is noted in Montrose Museum Accession Register as being donated in 1838, but was not seen in the museum which was overhauled c.1960 when several items were sold or auctioned with no record kept of their 'fate'.

Visited by OS (R L) 18 August 1971.
