Activities

Field Visit (24 January 2019)

This finger post, which stands within the NE angle of a crossroads 120m E of Danskine, comprises a vertical fluted cast-iron pole painted with alternating black and white bands and topped by a cast-iron ball finial. Immediately below the finial are two cast-iron finger boards and the stump of a third. The legend on the two surviving boards is accompanied by a bas relief hand with a pointing finger and this was no doubt also the case with the missing board. The surviving board that points N indicates the distance in miles to ‘CARFRAE’ (1½) and ‘GARVALD’ (3). The board that points E indicates the distances to ‘SNAWDON’ (¾), ‘MAYSHIEL’ (4⅛), ‘PRIESTLAW’ (5⅞) and ‘DUNS’ (18⅛). The missing board pointed W, but there can be some confidence that at least one of the distances given was that to Haddington. This is because, without exception, all of the other finger-posts with fluted poles and ball finials in the vicinity do so.
