Activities

Note (14 January 2019)

Information received by HES reports a stone standing 560m SSW of Shurrery Plantation, in an area of rough moorland in which there are numerous peat-cuttings. The stone, which is situated some 30m WNW of a rough track, measures 1.4m in breadth by 0.7m in thickness and about 1.4m in height.

A ‘Standing Stone’ is depicted at this location on the 1st edition of the OS 25-inch map (Caithness 1873, sheet XVI.12) but on the 2nd edition (1906) it is annotated simply as ‘Stone’, most likely an indication that the OS surveyors considered in to be a modern or natural feature. And it is probably for the same reason that the stone was excluded from the RCAHMS Inventory of Caithness (1911).

Information from HES Survey and Recording (GFG) 14 January 2019.
