Field Visit (3 January 2019)
This finger post, which stands on the WNW side of a T-junction 150m SW of Bolton, comprises a vertical cast-iron pole painted with alternating black and white bands and topped by a cast-iron hoop finial bearing the legend ‘EAST LOTHIAN C. C.’ [County Council]. Immediately below the finial is a round-ended finger board pointing NW and indicating the distance in miles to ‘BEGBIE’ (1¼) and ‘SAMUELSTON’ (1⅝). The shaft of the sign bears, in relief, the legend ‘STANTON’, indicating that it was manufactured at the Stanton Foundry, Ilkeston, Derbyshire.
