Archaeology Notes

HY74SE 9 7626 4383.

(Area: HY 762 438) A large, rounded hillock said to be the site of an earth-house or chamber lies in a cultivated field about 300 yds ENE of the farm-house of Lopness (HY 759 437) on Whale Head. No trace of a construction can now be seen but large stones are regularly encountered during cultivation.

RCAHMS 1946, visited 1928.

No trace and no local knowledge of structures on Whale Head, a natural hillock at HY 7626 4383, now surmounted by a water tower.

Visited by OS (NKB) 12 July 1970.

Water tower gone. Prominent large mound which is probably

artificial, but no sign of structures.
