Artefact Recovery (1 July 2017 - 31 August 2017)
NG 38352 57729 A newly created farm track dug through a raised beach deposit at South Cuidrach, resulted in a surface collection of lithics with Early Mesolithic/Late Upper Palaeolithic features. Much of the material is rolled, desilicified, and fragmented, suggesting a period of time in the tidal zone. Further shovel pitting extended the number of finds, but it was concluded that the site had been destroyed during the creation of the track as no significant in situ deposits were found. The raw material appears to be Staffin mudstone and tuff. An additional assemblage with classic Late Mesolithic features, is concentrated slightly to the N of this deposit. This work was carried out 1 July – 31 August 2017.
