Excavation (10 October 2016 - 21 October 2016)
NT 22180 70425 A programme of work was planned in advance of the construction of a house; however, the site had already been stripped and foundations laid before the arrival of an archaeologist. An excavation, 10–21 October 2016, post partial development of the site, uncovered several
notable features, including a stone-lined pit, a possible late 18th-century boundary wall and a possible Bronze Age cist. However, the sandstone wall, as well as the features and materials around the possible cist, were cut by the modern development. The stone-lined pit contained post-medieval finds and a possible prehistoric whetstone, perhaps associated with the possible cist. It is suggested that the pit was modern and the finds were not in situ. Some of the recovered pottery, which was probably associated with domestic refuse, ranged from 14th- to 17th-century AD in
date. A single sherd of prehistoric pottery (possibly mid/late Neolithic or Early Bronze Age) and worked hammerstones were also recovered.
