Archaeological Evaluation (9 October 2017 - 16 October 2017)
NT 40645 69447 A 10% evaluation was undertaken, 9–16 October 2017, in advance of a proposed residential development. A total of 2315 linear metres of trenches were excavated across the area. One pit was identified in the southern section of the site but no finds were retrieved and
it is therefore undated. Trenches which targeted cropmarks uncovered several circular pit-type features in the central section of the site. These were 1.2–3.5m wide and had been backfilled with slag and clinker material. These were probably former mining and ventilation shafts associated with the use of the majority of the site by the 19th- and 20th-century Limeylands and Bellyford Collieries, which were
located to the N of this area.
