Activities

Excavation (22 August 2013 - 23 September 2013)

A community archaeological excavation was undertaken on the site of the former Tupp Inn/Jenny Tear's pub, Lugar Street, Cumnock, East Ayrshire. It was managed by Northlight Heritage on behalf of East Ayrshire Council and took place between 22nd August and 23rd September 2013. The excavation and desk-based research formed part of a wider heritage and arts project, Raising the Bar (www.cumnockraisethebar.or.uk). The project focused on the heritage of a gap site in Lugar Street, in the heart of this historic village in East Ayrshire. The gap site was formerly the site of Jenny Tear's pub, also known as the Tupp Inn. It involved schoolchildren and adult volunteers in investigating how the site was used in the past, while also using the space to facilitate learning and creative practice among the wider community. The gap site had considerable potential to illuminate the history of Cumnock, lying as it does within the historic post-medieval street pattern and close to key historic buildings, such as the Baird Institute and Old Cumnock Old Church.
