Arbirlot parish church was built in 1832 and added to in 1886; it stands on an early site dedicated to St Ninian, asserted at have been monastic by some authorities. However, Cowan and Easson state that though Maurice, abbot of Arbirlot witnesses charters c.1201 x 1214, his office may have been titular, and there is no record of the foundation or of a community of monks here. Arbirlot church is completely modern with no early masonry.
