Metal Detector Find (2014)

NX 74 64 A number of Roman-period finds have been recovered in the environs of Glenlochar Roman fort during metal detecting. A highly curved bronze handle comes from a wine cup; the stylised female head at the top is probably a Maenad, a follower of Bacchus. A conical lead weight with a U-shaped suspension loop may either be a plumb-bob or a measuring weight (its mass, 40.22g, is almost exactly 1.5 Roman ounces). The two other finds are Iron Age styles of copper-alloy metalwork which are common finds on Roman military sites: a circular enamelled harness mount with a central band of red and blue enamelled lozenges, flanked by worn curvilinear designs; and a so-called ‘mini terret’, a D-shaped strap terminal with collars flanking an attachment bar.

Claimed as Treasure Trove (TT 170/14, 33/15 and 36/15), allocated to the Stewartry Museum
