Activities

Excavation (17 August 2015 - 8 September 2015)

NO 86609 87458 Following an evaluation, two trenches were excavated at East Lodge prior to Phase 2b of a housing development. One trench contained a prehistoric pit with associated pottery. The larger trench contained three hut circles with associated pottery, a virtually complete saddle quern built onto a section of foundation, several pierced and cup-marked stones including one with central cup mark and concentric incised circles, decorated on both sides. The work was undertaken 17 August - 8 September 2015.

Alison Cameron and Robert Lenfert - Cameron Archaeology

(Source: DES, Volume 16)

Following the discovery of prehistoric settlements and artefacts during an archaeological evaluation in April and May of 2015 for the East Lodge Development (Lenfert 2015), subsequent excavations were carried out between July 17th and September 8th, 2015 by Robert Lenfert and Stuart Farrell of Cameron Archaeology. The excavations revealed the foundations of three prehistoric structures, two of which may be regarded as 'hut circles', while the third forms a slighter, perhaps temporary, shelter or outbuilding. In addition, a number of refuse or storage pits and shallow deposits, both within and outwith the structures were identified. The artefacts recovered include two partial saddle-type quernstones for grinding grain, pierced stones, stones with a single cup mark, cup and ring marked stone, flint tools and waste flakes or 'debitage', and decorated and undecorated pottery fragments. Most notably, the excavation revealed a remarkable double-sided, double-carved portable cup and ring-marked stone (see cover), which thus far appears to be a unique archaeological find within a Scottish, if not European, context. An abundance of charcoal fragments sampled throughout the site will allow C14 radiocarbon determinations to accurately date phases of site occupation and activity.
