St Vigeans 11 (St Vigianus), Angus, cross-slab fragments

Place of discovery: NO c 6384 4289
Present location: in St Vigeans Museum (HES).
Evidence for discovery: removed in two pieces from the clearstorey wall during the 1871 restoration. By 1903 it was set in a wooden frame in the church porch, and in 1960 it was taken into St Vigeans Museum.
Present condition: trimmed top and bottom for re-use and broken into two (now joined). The lower part of face A has been chiselled away, and the surfaces generally are worn and damaged.
Description
This cross-slab probably had a rounded top and it is carved in relief on both broad faces. Both faces are edged with a plain flat-band moulding, on which the arms of the cross encroach on face A and the bench terminals encroach on face C.

No.11. Upright cross-slab. In the middle of the front face is a wheeled cross upon a base. On each side of the base is a robed and tonsured monk or priest. On the other side are two seated ecclesiastics.
Between and above them was a smaller robed figure whose feet and garment can just be seen. Below them two hooded figures (laymen?), each with a staff, confront one another. Removed from St Vigeans Church to museum, 1960 (NO 6383 4294).
