Activities

Watching Brief (3 April 2015 - 20 April 2015)

NX 74080 64046 A watching brief was carried out, 3–20 April 2015, during the replacement of three electricity poles to the W of Mains of Greenlaw, which involved the excavation of a small 1.8m deep trench at each location. The line of the poles lies to the S of Glenlochar Roman temporary camp V, in an area where aerial photography has shown pit-like features. Two trenches (for Poles C and E) produced no clear archaeological features. One trench (Pole D) partially sectioned a shallow pit. The pit cut into the natural sand and gravel and this may provide an explanation for its purpose; that is as a quarry pit. Although unlikely to be recent the absence of any finds meant its date could not be ascertained.
