(NO 6439 4227) Souterrain (NR)
OS 1:10000 map (1975)
A souterrain, recognised for what it was in January 1932, although it had previously been encountered during grave digging. In fact, although 22' of the passage, including the narrow entrance, are exposed and preserved, c. 25' must lie below the graves to the S; some of the burials are known to be actually in the souterrain.
The main passage is c. 4' wide and the walls show signs of having been corbelled inwards. It is built into a clay knoll. Pieces of bone and a row of animal teeth are the only known finds.
F T Wainwright 1963.
