Archaeological Evaluation (18 January 2016 - 22 January 2016)
NS 42075 64320 An evaluation was undertaken, 18–22 January 2016, in advance of a residential development on the grounds of the former Merchiston House. The work consisted of the excavation of trenches covering 8% of the previously undeveloped ground to the S and W of the former Merchiston Hospital buildings and associated infrastructure. The trenches demonstrated that the majority of the site had been disturbed by the previous hospital construction, with up to 2m of made ground overlying the underlying clays in some areas. In the SW corner of the site there were signs of undisturbed former soil horizons, but no archaeological features or artefacts were encountered.
