Archaeology Notes

HY64SE 5 6602 4015

There is a long mound, apparently a stalled cairn, east of Bea Loch and immediately east of the road, at Castlehill.

It is aligned roughly east to west and is 90 to 100ft long by 15 to 18ft wide.

Information from F W Wainwright Mss Index 3 June 1957 (In possession of MoPBW [HBM]).

The farmer, Mr E Groundwater, at Castlehill, Sanday indicated the spot at HY 6602 4015 where a mound was created about forty years ago by dumping refuse from cleaned ditches between Kettletoft and Castlehill. It was completely removed in 1969 when the land was brought under cultivation. This is undoubtedly the mound seen by Wainwright.

Visited by OS (RL), 6 July 1970.

Note (1980)

near Castlehill, Sanday HY 6602 4015 HY64SE 5

An elongated mound, tentatively suggested by Wainwright as a stalled cairn, and since removed, has been identified as a spoil-dump resulting from ditch-clearance.
