This is part of a large farm built for the Traill family of Westove, which includes a lectern dovecote and a later steam-powered meal mill. The conical stone windmill base is all that remains of a number of windmills in Sanday in the 19th century. The entrance was at second-floor level.
The fertile island of Sanday has a number of interesting farm buildings. There was a 'model farm' of the industria lised 19th century at Stove at the south end of the island; the buildings are now ruined but they include an exceptionally large byre for cattle and a red-brick chimney which served a steam-driven mill (HY 608355). At Tresness there is a hexagonal horse-engine house built in the 19th century to power the adjacent threshing-mill (HY 703387), while at Boloquoy may be seen an early 19th-century meal mill with a vertical iron wheel.
