Activities

Field Visit (12 May 2017)

John Ainslie's map of the Counties of Fife and Kinross with the Rivers Forth and Tay (c1775) depicts the line of the turnpike road between Northferry (North Queensferry) and Perth, and shows the location along that route of 29 milestones.

About 1823 a new route (now the A912) across the River Earn and through to Milnathort was built and the original route reduced to use by local traffic. The site of the milestone that indicated the distance of fourteen miles to Perth lies S of Milnathort and therefore on a section of the early turnpike road that was overlain by the later. However, because of the different routes taken by those roads, the position of the original milestone 14, which was not found on the date of visit, is not the same as the later stone (NO10NW 111).
