Activities

Field Visit (5 August 2010)

This cast-iron guide plate is situated on the N side of the junction of the A917 and B940 public roads immediately N of Crail. It measures 0.58m in breadth by about 0.87m in height and though once secured to a post or wall by means of a bracket that is still attached to its rear, the plate is now freestanding. The upper edge of the plate bears the legend ‘Robert Douglas, Engineer, Cupar’. Once broken, the plate is now held together by metal ties that are secured to the rear surface. The angled S face has been painted white against a black surround with the place-names also highlighted in black. The left side of the panel indicated the direction, but not the distances, to Lochton, Airdrie, Kippo, Kingsmuir, Denino, Upper Carnbee, Longo, Lathones, Radernie, Greigston, Ceres and Cupar. The right side of the panel indicated the direction, but not the distances, to Wormiston, Randerston, Cambo, Kingsbarns, Pitmilly, Kenly, Kenlygreen, Boarhills, Polduff, Kingask, Brownhills and St Andrews.

Visited by RCAHMS (JRS) 5 August 2010.
