(NO 5918 9378) Cairn (NR)
OS 6" map, (1959)
An immense cairn exists in the woods of Finzean though now much beneath its original size; and on the adjacent hill are to be seen a great number of smaller cairns and tumuli.
New Statistical Account (NSA) 1845.
A wedge-shaped, steep-sided cairn of bare stones c. 3.5m high, and measuring 33.0m WNW-ESE by 26.0m transversely at its broader ENE end and 9.0m at the WNW end. The wedge shape is well defined and the remains are suggestive of a long cairn.
Revised at 1:2500.
To the NE, centred at NO 595 939, are a few low mounds, probably denuded stone clearance heaps, which may be some of the mounds referred to by Smith.
Visited by OS (A A) 9 August 1972.
The dimensions and width-length ratio of this cairn are paralleled in Henshall's short trapezoidal form of long cairn (Henshall 1972) and the remains probably represent a long cairn of this type.
A S Henshall 1972; Visited by OS (E C W) 14 November 1972.
