This freestanding stone reads: "5 miles from the General Post Office Edinburgh - erected to regulate the Post Horse duties payable by Hackney coaches 1824".
It is clear that this stone has been moved but it is unclear how long it has been at its current location.
Corstorphine Heritage Centre notes that this stone was originally on the main Glasgow/Edinburgh road 5 miles from the General Post Office referred to on the stone.

The GPO referred to in the inscription on the duty stone was built in 1814 and was located at 16-20 Waterloo Place. Its replacement the (now converted) GPO building located at the foot of North Bridge/Waterloo Place was completed in 1861 (architect, Robert Matheson).
