(NO 5649 7543) Castle (NR) (Ruins of) (NAT)

OS 6" map, Forfarshire and Angus, 2nd ed., (1902)

The ruins of Shanno Castle known as 'The Castle' or 'Auldha' and erected by the Lindsays of Edzell about 1607.

A Jervise 1853.

The ruins of a strongly built house rather than a castle, situated on a flattish area high up the hillside overlooking the ruined farm of Shanno, whose construction is similar to, though lighter than, that of the 'Castle'. The ruins indicate a rectangular building, 14m by 6m overall with 1m generally elsewhere. They are of mortared boulder construction, as is a collapsed courtyard wall on the south and west. This area has been used as a sheepfold.

Visited by OS (J L D) 28 July 1958.

Still known as Shanno Castle locally, this house appears to be the ruins of a laird's house of no particular significance and is as described by OS.

Visited by OS (A A) 10 November 1971.
