(NO 5339 6413) St Aidan's Well (NR) (site of)

OS 1:10,000 map, (1972).

The site of a spring dedicated to St Aidan, sometimes corrupted to St Iten, and believed to perform miraculous cures.

A J Warden 1884.

By 1853 the water had been drained to issue from a spout at the road-side, round which a building had been erected by 1862, when only a hollow marked the actual site of the well.

A Jervise 1853; Name Book 1862.

There is no trace of a well at the site indicated.

Visited by OS (RL) 1 November 1967.
