Desk Based Assessment (21 June 2016)
Although there are now no physical remains to be seen at Thankerton of a former ferry crossing here, the presence of one can safely be inferred from the placename 'Boat' which appears on 18th century maps, including Roy's Military Map (1748-55), and remained in place well into the 19th century, many years after a bridge (NS93NE 74) had been built. The most likely location for the ferry crossing is about 50m south of the bridge, at a point where access to the river could be gained via a lane that runs off the eastern end of 'Boat Road'.
