Activities

Magnetometry (16 January 2014 - 24 July 2014)

NT 5153 7355 A geophysical survey was undertaken, 16 January – 24 July 2014, of Neilson Park in advance of development work. The work, undertaken in two phases, consisted of 136 grids each 20 x 20m, and aimed to assess the evidence for past human use, particularly in relation to

the 1548-49 siege of Haddington.

An initial survey recorded a possible curvilinear ditch with two apparent off-shoots and part of a possible second curvilinear ditch, all of which may be related to the siege of 1548–49. It also recorded a large magnetic di-pole that may represent episodes of burning or the location of buried metal objects. A number of more recent features relating to the modern use of the area as a recreation ground were also identified.

A second survey in July 2014 recorded an area of compacted ground, five di-polar magnetic anomalies and an area of general ground disturbance. The di-poles probably reflect modern drainage features, while the general ground disturbance appears to be related to the construction of artificial surfaces and a skateboard park. The compacted ground was in an area used for sporting activities and probably reflects this use.
