Desk Based Assessment (20 March 2015)

James Hay’s New Plan of Musselburgh and its Environs, 1824, (RHP1855) depicts a ‘Wauk Mill’, comprising three buildings, on the E bank of the River Esk. It is shown in more detail on the 1853 Ordnance Survey town plan of Musselburgh (Sheet 11) at which time the southern building comprised several compartments. That to the ESE of the lade that ran under the building contained a ‘Flint Mill’ (NT37SE 1242) and that to the WNW of (and also partly overlying) the lade, a “Washing & Scouring Mill”, which had a “Boiler” adjacent to its NNE side. All traces of these early mills were presumably destroyed when the Inveresk Paper Mill, itself now removed, was built (completed in 1871).
