(NO 5103 5177) Barnsdale Castle (NR) (site of)

OS 6" map, (1969)

The alleged site of Barnsdale or Rescobie Castle on a former island, possibly artificial (Stuart 1868), now connected to land by either a natural ridge or a causeway.

There appears to be no evidence for the existence of a castle (Jervise 1861), although a great quantity of stone is said to have existed here at the beginning of the 19th century (Carrie 1881).

Donald Bane (late 11th century) is said to have been imprisoned in this castle.
