Field Visit (12 November 2014)
These flood defences comprise an embankment, grass-grown but of stony construction, which runs for a total distance of 730m along the west bank of the River Clyde and, where best preserved, measures up to 3m in thickness by 1m in height. All but the northernmost 200m of the bank is depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 25-inch map (Lanark 1864, Sheet XLVII.11). Here, where it runs across a field of improved pasture, the bank has become degraded, measuring up to 4m in thickness but no more than 0.5m in height; at its south end it simply peters out where the natural ground-level rises, thus negating the need for a levee.
