(NO 5332 3470) The Mound (NAT) Motte (NR)
OS 1:10000 map (1974)
A small conical-shaped hill, 35' in height. Mr Kidd (Grange of Barry) does not think The Mound is artificial, but rather a small natural hill, flattened on top and dressed at the sides for ornamental purposes by previous proprietors. It thus has the appearance of being artificial on the W and S sides, but appears natural on the E and part of the N.
Name Book 1858
Moot Hill, Knox's Map 1831 - a large artificial mound, doubtless a motte. OS 6" record sheet annotated by O G S Crawford, undated.
The Mound has every appearance of a motte and seems entirely artificial. Its flat top measures 13.0m x 14.0m, and is occupied by a water cistern. Its height varies from 8.0m on the N to 12.0m on the S. No stonework is visible around the summit, and there is no trace of a bailey.
Visited by OS (JLD) 30 May 1958.
