Archaeology Notes

NO53SE 2 5600 3435

(NO 5600 3435) Supposed Site of Battle (NR)

Between the Scots and Danes 1010 (NAT)

OS 6" map (1858)

The site of the Battle of Barry, fought in 1010, between the Scots under Malcolm II, and the Danes under Camus, is in the eastern part of the parish. The Danes were defeated, with heavy loss of life on both

sides.

This would appear to be a battle invented in the usual way to account for the finding of the burials (NO53SE 1) since no acceptable historian appears to note it.

A J Warden 1881.
