Archaeology Notes

NO53NW 6 c. 5180 3905.

(Area: NO 5180 3905) A castle stood on rising ground about 250 yds N of Monikie parish church. The only remains now extant are two triangular stones built into the front of a cottage adjoining the farm steading of Kirkton. One bears the initials and date DL:BE:1578. Part of the castle was standing at the beginning of the century. Jervise (1853) gives the date on the stone as 1587.

No trace of this castle was seen in the area indicated. The two armorial panels are in the S wall of the cottage at NO 5174 3882; one is dated 1587.
